RESUMO

Food security is an important factor in ensuring a healthy diet. However, it has been reported that women are more vulnerable to food insecurity than men in many countries. In addition, there is little evidence that Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence is associated with a lower risk of food insecurity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate food insecurity and associated factors in women of childbearing age. In addition, women's adherence to MD and its relationship with food insecurity were evaluated. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 2675 adult women aged 18-49. The demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits, compliance with the MD, and the level of food insecurity were evaluated using the structured, self-administered, web-based questionnaire form. The mean age of the individuals was 29.5 ± 10.35 years. 21.6% of individuals had food insecurity, and 5.2% had severe food insecurity. 36.4% of the individuals adhere to the MD. There was a statistically significant difference between the individuals with and without food security regarding age, marital status, and income status (p < .05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in terms of the Mediterranean diet adherence score (MEDAS) and MEDAS classification between individuals with and without food security (p > .05). It was determined that age, marital status, and income status affected food insecurity (R 2 = 0.374; p < .001). Also, it was determined that age, number of main meals and snacks, and income status affected adherence to MD (R 2 = 0.286; p < .001). In conclusion, considering the fragility of women in food insecurity, more comprehensive studies should be conducted in this area to better define the factors associated with food insecurity in women and inform policymakers. In addition, the results of this study can shed light on comprehensive intervention studies in this area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet, sustainable and healthy eating behaviors, and climate change awareness in adults. METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 1797 adults ages 19-65 y. Demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, sustainable and healthy eating behaviors, and climate change awareness were ascertained through a questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean age of the individuals was 27.5 ± 11.76 y, and 50.5% of the participants were adherent to the Mediterranean diet. A statistically significant difference was found between individuals who did and did not adhere to the Mediterranean diet in terms of age, income status, total score and subscores on the Sustainable and Healthy Eating Behaviors Scale, and subscores for information on climate change causes (P < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS) total score, the Sustainable and Healthy Eating Behaviors Scale total score and subscores, and the Climate Change Awareness Scale total score and subscores (P < 0.05). It was determined that sex, education level, and income status affected the Climate Change Awareness Scale total score (P < 0.05). It was determined that age, income status, the Sustainable and Healthy Eating Behaviors Scale total score, and the Climate Change Awareness Scale total score affected the MEDAS total score (P < 0.05). Also, it was determined that age, sex, education level, MEDAS total score, and Climate Change Awareness Scale total score affected the Sustainable and Healthy Eating Behaviors Scale total score (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a significant effect of climate change awareness on sustainable and healthy eating behaviors and adherence to the Mediterranean diet.

RESUMO

Objective: To determine factors affecting obstetric outcomes in pregnancies after conization by loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) or cold-knife conization (CKC) due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Material and Methods: The maternal and clinical characteristics and obstetric outcomes of CKC, LEEP and control groups were evaluated and compared. Risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes were evaluated using multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: The incidence of preterm delivery, PPROM, low APGAR scores, fetal mortality, and late-period spontaneous abortus was highest in patients who underwent CKC (p<0.05). Cone depth of CKC was longer than LEEP (p=0.025). Cervical length (CL) at pregnancy was CKC

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between food and cooking skills and healthy eating attitudes in college students. The demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits, attitudes toward healthy eating, and cooking and food preparation skills were questioned. 16.2% of the students have moderate, 63.5% high, and 20.3% ideally high attitudes toward healthy eating. While a positive and significant correlation was found between the total score and sub-factor scores of the "Cooking Skills and Food Skills" scale and the total score of the "Attitude Scale for Healthy Nutrition"; a negative statistically significant correlation was found between the total score and sub-factor scores of the "Cooking Skills and Food Skills" scale and the frequency of consumption of fast-food, processed meat products, packaged foods, and bread types (p < .05). Cooking and food preparation skills seem to be positively associated with healthy attitudes and habits. Considering this positive association, interventions to improve food and cooking skills may help promote healthy eating attitudes in college students. Developing these skills can shed light on increasing the frequency of cooking at home, consuming healthier foods, and as a result, providing a healthy eating attitude. Therefore, more comprehensive intervention studies are needed in this area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In this study, it was aimed to examine the psychometric characteristics of the scale named 'Food and Nutrition Literacy Questionnaire for Chinese School-age Children (FNLQ-SC)' in Turkish school age adolescents. METHODS: The research was carried out with 341 school-age adolescents aged 10 to 17 years. The Cronbach's α coefficient was used to evaluate internal consistency reliability and the test-retest method was applied. The construct validity was assessed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and the content validity was assessed by the Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: EFA indicated that the Turkish version of FNLQ-SC had three factorial structures that accounted for 42.0% of the total variance. The overall Turkish version of FNLQ-SC questionnaire had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.679). The dimensional structure obtained in the EFA was controlled by CFA and the three-factor model showed acceptable goodness-of-fit indices (χ2/df = 1.924, RMSEA = 0.052, CFI = 0.864, GFI = 0.949). The Pearson correlation coefficients between each dimension and the overall questionnaire ranged from 0.300 to 0.842. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that age, gender, grade of class, being an only child and discussing nutrition information with families had an effect on food and nutrition literacy (R2 = 0.312; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Turkish version of FNLQ-SC has good reliability and construct validity to assess the food and nutrition literacy of Turkish school age adolescents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Students are an important group threatened by food insecurity. Food insecurity among college students is one of the research topics that is attracting attention worldwide, and interest in this topic is growing by the day. Food insecurity has a negative impact on students' biological, mental and social health. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of food insecurity and correlate it with frequency of food consumption and some variables among undergraduate students. METHODS: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted with 1149 university students at Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey. The demographic characteristics of the individuals (gender, age, living situation, income status, and health information), anthropometric measurements (body weight and height), nutritional habits, frequency of food consumption, and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) were questioned. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: It was found that 13.1% of the students have mild, 13.0% moderate, and 9.4% severe food insecurity. The rate of individuals with and without food security differs according to gender, living situation, and income status (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant correlations between the food insecurity score and age (p = 0.047), the number of main meals (p < 0.001) and snacks (0.007), and consumption frequency of certain foods (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalance of students facing food insecurity was high. Individuals with food insecurity have a lower frequency of healthy food consumption than individuals with food security. Steps should be taken to ensure nutritional security among undergraduate students, who are the young adult population.

RESUMO

Background: The risks added by extended jugular lymphatic sacs (EJLS) to increased nuchal translucency (NT) including genetic and structural abnormalities and pregnancy outcomes have not been previously investigated, which this study aims to investigate. Methods: The data of 155 singleton pregnancies with increased fetal NT (≥95th percentile) of these 20 with fetal EJLS were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were stratified according to NT thickness such that ≥95th percentile - 3.5 mm, 3.6-4.4 mm, 4.5-5.4 mm, 5.5-6.4 mm, ≥6.5 mm, and grouped according to the presence of EJLS. Pregnancy outcomes, genetic and structural abnormalities were assessed by comparing EJLS with non-EJSL cases (n-EJLS). Results: Associated with NT, the incidence of the presence of EJLS increased with NT, from 4.5% at the ≥95th percentile - 3.5 mm to 30.8% when NT ≥5.5 mm. In the n-EJLS group, the proportion of fetuses with structural and genetic abnormalities increased as the measurement of NT increased. This correlation was not observed in the EJLS group. Compared to n-EJLS, cases with EJLS had a higher rate of fetal structural (38.5% vs. 75%, P = 0.003) and genetic (18.5% vs. 45%, P = 0.005) anomalies and a lower term live birth rate (59.3% vs. 15%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The increasing rate of EJLS was seen as NT increased. Compared to n-EJLS, the EJLS cases had a higher rate poor pregnancy outcomes and fetal genetic and structural abnormalities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a current popular dietary strategy for noncommunicable diseases. However, studies demonstrated contradictory results for it and in all dietary strategies, diet quality is an the important part of the well-being. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of TRE and energy-restricted diet (ERD) on the nutritional status and diet quality of individuals. METHODS: This pilot study was completed 23 healthy overweight female. Anthropometric and body composition measurements of individuals were taken. The energy expenditure was measured using indirect calorimetry. Blood pressure and heart rate measurements were made. Biochemical parameters were evaluated and food consumption were taken. The quality of dietary intake was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) -2015. The physical activity levels of the individuals were estimated using the physical activity record. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 22.0) software was used for all analyses. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: After 8 weeks of intervention, while no change was observed in the diet quality of the individuals in the TRE group (p > 0.05), a significant increase was found in the diet quality score of the individuals in the ERD group (p < 0.05). There was a 3.2% and 5.5% decrease in body weight of individuals in the TRE and ERD groups, respectively (p < 0.05). While no significant change was observed in the body fat percentage of individuals in the TRE group (p > 0.05), a 7.1% decrease was observed in the ERD group (p < 0.05). A statistically significant decrease was found in the total cholesterol (3.7%) in the ERD group, and in the total cholesterol (6.7%) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (6.5%) in the TRE group. In addition, a statistically significant increase was found in adiponectin (77.3%) and total antioxidant status (TAS) (13.2%) in the ERD group. CONCLUSION: Energy-restricted diet yielded better results in weight loss and improvement of body composition and diet quality compared to TRE. Also, a decrease in total cholesterol level was found in the ERD group. However, more studies should be done with longer follow-ups and high sample sizes are very important in terms of creating public health-based recommendations.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the Turkish psychometric properties of The Attitudes and Beliefs of Nursing Students Towards the Childhood Overweight Scale. METHODS: The study was conducted with 219 nursing students. The data were obtained with the 'Information Form' and the 'Attitudes and Beliefs of Nursing Students Towards Childhood Overweight. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines was implemented in the study. RESULT: Original scale was created using the Attitudes Towards Obese Person Scale (ATOP) and the Beliefs About Obese Persons Scale (BAOP). ATOP consists of 13 items and two sub-dimensions (self-concept, social relationships) in a 5-point Likert type that evaluates nursing students' attitudes towards childhood obesity. BAOP is 5-point Likert-type and consists of 6 items that evaluate nursing students' beliefs on childhood obesity. When the item-total score correlations were examined in the study, two items showing a negative correlation in the "ATOP" were removed. Cronbach's alpha was 0.80 for the ATOP and 0.83 for the BAOP. In the exploratory EFA and confirmatory CFA factor analyses, the factor loading of all items was >0.40 for both scales. CONCLUSION: It was determined that Turkish psychometric properties of the Nursing Students' Attitudes and Beliefs towards Childhood Obesity Scales were valid and reliable.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Omphalocele is associated with many aneuploidies, deletions and congenital anomalies. This study evaluates pregnancies diagnosed with omphalocele and its relevance to concomitant genetic disorders. METHODS: The data of patients with the intrauterine diagnosis of omphalocele who had invasive diagnostic testing performed between January 2017 and January 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. The traditional karyotype analysis was performed to prenatal diagnosis for all fetuses. During the study period, all patients were scanned via ultrasonography by an experienced perinatologist, prenatally. RESULTS: We evaluated 22 cases of omphalocele whose genetic testing results were available. The mean maternal age was 25 (18-41) years. The median gestational week at diagnosis was 13 (11-22). Invasive genetic testing revealed aneuploidy in 7 patients (31.8%), 2 with trisomy 13 (9.1%), and 5 with trisomy 18 (22.8%). There were 5 fetuses (22.7%) that had extracorporeal liver: 1 had trisomy 18 (20%), 1 had trisomy 13 (20%), and the other 3 fetuses had a normal karyotype (60%). Further, 14 (63.6%) pregnancies were terminated: 4 had trisomy 18 (28.6%), 1 had trisomy 13 (7.1%), and 9 of the terminated pregnancies (64.3%) had additional congenital anomalies. There were 4 infants who died (50%) born from 8 patients who decided to continue with their pregnancy. The omphalocele sac of 1 infant spontaneously regressed in the ensuing weeks of pregnancy who is now 1 year old. CONCLUSIONS: The chromosomal abnormalities presented in up to 31.8% of cases diagnosed with omphalocele. Moreover, for cases with normal genetic testing results, the propensity for additional structural defects was high and the prognosis remains poor. Counseling parents to consider their option of terminating the pregnancy is appropriate.

RESUMO

Background: adolescence is a critical period for developing healthy eating habits. It is crucial to evaluate and encourage adherence to the Mediterranean diet, a sustainable and healthy diet model in this age group. Objective: this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and anthropometric measurements and nutritional status in Turkish adolescents. Material and methods: the demographic characteristics, health information, nutritional habits, physical activity status, and 24-hour dietary recall of the adolescents were obtained with a questionnaire. Adherence to Mediterranean diet was evaluated with the Mediterranean-Style Dietary Pattern Score (MSDPS). Results: a total of 1,137 adolescents (mean age 14.0 ± 1.37 years) were included; 30.2 % of the boys and 39.5 % of the girls were overweight/obese. The median (interquartile range) value of the MSDPS was 10.7 (7.7), and this value was 11.0 (7.6) for the boys and 10.6 (7.4) for the girls (p > 0.05). The levels of protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, zinc, and potassium intake increased with adherence to Mediterranean diet (p < 0.001). Age, parental education level, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and skipping meals affected MSDPS. Conclusion: adolescents’ adherence to the Mediterranean diet was low and correlated with some anthropometric measures. Increasing adherence to the Mediterranean diet may contribute to preventing obesity and adequate and balanced nutrition in adolescents. (AU)

RESUMO

AIMS: High bisphenol A (BPA) concentration may compromise normal placental development. The aim of this study was to determine maternal serum BPA concentrations in pregnant women with complicated preeclampsia (PE) and normal pregnant women, to compare BPA concentrations, and to examine pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This prospective case-control study was conducted between March 2021 and October 2021. Serum BPA levels of preeclamptic pregnancy and normal pregnancy were statistically evaluated. In addition, the PE group was divided into three subgroups according to the course of pregnancy. Group 1: patients with non-severe PE who delivered at 37 weeks or later, Group 2: patients with severe PE who delivered at less than 34 weeks, Group 3: patients with severe PE who delivered between 34 and 37 weeks. The association between BPA levels and pregnancy outcome was investigated. RESULTS: Forty-six cases in the PE group were compared with 46 cases of normal pregnancies. The median BPA level was 19.46 ng/mL in the PE group and 16.36 ng/mL in the control group. The median BPA levels in the PE group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p = 0.007). Serum BPA levels were significantly lower in women who delivered at 37 weeks or later than in women who delivered at less than 34 weeks due to severe PE (p ≤ 0.018). CONCLUSION: Our study highlights the association between elevated maternal serum levels of BPA and PE. Moreover, knowledge of BPA levels in women with PE may provide information about the prognosis of pregnancy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) involving masticatory muscle pain, disc displacement with reduction, or both and to determine the associations of these disorders with anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study consisted of 150 patients with TMDs and 50 healthy controls. Patients were diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) Axis I and then divided into three diagnostic groups: masticatory muscle pain (group MP), disc displacement with reduction (group DD), or both (group MPDD). The participants completed the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaires for assessment of OHRQoL and anxiety, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U post hoc paired-comparison tests. RESULTS: A total of 121 of the patients (60.25%) were female and 79 (39.75%) were male, ranging from ages 18 to 68 years (mean age: 37.32 ± 13.62). Gender distribution, mean age, educational status, and occupational status were similar among groups. The OHIP-14 global and domain scores and distribution of GAD-7 levels were significantly different among groups (P < .001). For psychologic discomfort and disability domains, group MPDD statistically scored the highest, followed by group MP, group DD, and then the control group (P < .05). According to correlation analyses, there were positive correlations between the GAD-7 and all OHIP-14 scores (r = 0.438, P < .001) within group MPDD. CONCLUSION: OHRQoL is negatively affected by TMDs and worsens as the severity of anxiety increases. Therefore, physical conditions and anxiety levels in TMD patients should be simultaneously considered for treatment and maintenance. Int J Prosthodont 2023;36:148-154. doi: 10.11607/ijp.7587.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sphingomonas paucimobilis, an aerobic, non-fermentative, Gram-negative opportunistic bacillus, can colonize everywhere in hospital settings where water is used. We reported a hospital S paucimobilis outbreak that persisted for nearly 2 years despite all necessary preventive measures. METHODS: Over a period from February 13, 2020 to December 3, 2021, 67 patients were identified to have S paucimobilis as documented by positive cultures from clinical samples, along with 19 positive environmental samples. RESULTS: Bacterial regrowth for molecular analysis could be obtained in 49 isolates (39 clinical, 4 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) water heater devices, 1 unused mouthwash solution, 5 water samples from thoracic drainage aspirators). Two distinct clonally indistinguishable genotypes were detected in AP-PCR and PFGE analyses, with 100% consistency. The main cluster was obtained consistently throughout the outbreak from 30 samples (61.2%: 24 clinical, 4 ECMO, 1 unused mouthwash solution, 1 water sample from the thoracic drainage aspirator). The other cluster involved 15 clinical samples and 4 water samples from the thoracic drainage aspirators. CONCLUSIONS: Given that waterborne pathogens can spread to a wide range of equipment used in healthcare environments, the pathogens can persist on the surfaces of environmental devices even after recommended disinfection measures have been applied. Therefore, individual tracking of all devices used in critical care settings, such as thoracic drainage aspirators and ECMO water heater devices, with records of pre- and post-disinfection procedures is of paramount importance for complete elimination of the source of infection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The determination of nutritional knowledge and nutrition literacy among nursing students will enable nursing departments to establish the needs and solutions to enhance nutrition education in their education programs. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the nutrition literacy and nutrition knowledge level of nursing students. METHOD: The study data were collected with 'Information Form', 'Anthropometric Measurements', 'Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for Adults', and 'Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults'. Analyzes were performed using descriptive and nonparametric tests. RESULTS: The score of nutrition knowledge is 56.6 ± 6.8 and 50.5% of them have a good nutrition knowledge level. The total nutrition literacy score is 28.6 ± 4.4 and 91.6% of them have a sufficient nutrition literacy level. It was no significant difference between students' characteristic features and nutrition knowledge score and nutrition literacy total score (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the nutrition knowledge score and the nutrition literacy total score and the nutrition literacy sub-sections scores (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: It has been determined that the nutrition knowledge and nutrition literacy levels of nursing students correlated with each other. To improve students' nutrition knowledge levels, as well as to improve their nutrition literacy and prevent non-communicable diseases nutrition lessons should be included in the curriculum.

RESUMO

Background: To evaluate cases diagnosed with fetal abdominal cyst diagnosed in prenatal period. Methods: We retrieved the cases diagnosed with fetal abdominal cyst between the years 2018 and 2020 from hospital's database. The localization, origin, dimensions, properties (simple or complex), and characteristics (solid, cystic, vascularity) were noted both in prenatal and postnatal period. We also tested the diagnostic performance of ultrasonography according to endpoint diagnosis revealed postnatally. Results: During the study period, a total of 29 cases diagnosed as fetal abdominal cyst. Of them, there were 11 (37.9%) gastrointestinal, 9 (31%) ovarian, 6 (20.6%) genitourinary, 3 (10.3%) hepatobiliary system cysts. In our study, we were able to identify 5 (45%) of 11 fetuses with postnatally confirmed gastrointestinal system cysts, 1 (33%) of 3 fetuses with hepatobiliary system cysts, 3 (50%) of 6 fetuses with urinary system cysts and 6 (66%) of 9 fetuses with ovarian cysts. Conclusion: In this study, the most common abdominal cyst was ovarian cysts. The most difficult to diagnose cysts are those that originated from gastrointestinal system and hepatobiliary system.

RESUMO

This study aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and ecological footprint which is an indicator of sustainability and environmental impact and to examine the factors that may affect them. It was found that 20.3% of individuals have inadequate, 43.7% problematic, 26.1% sufficient and 10.0% excellent health literacy levels. There were differences in age, education level and BMI classification according to Ecological Footprint Awareness Scale score quartiles and health literacy levels (p < 0.05). It was determined that age and Turkey Health Literacy Scale score had effect on ecological footprint awareness. Individuals with a high level of health literacy have a high awareness of their ecological footprint. The increase in people's health literacy levels and ecological footprint awareness with age can be interpreted as the increase in people's education and knowledge levels and their awareness levels against the protection of nature and the environment.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to examine the levels of vitamin D in postterm pregnancy. The study consisted of two groups: Group 1: women with postterm pregnancy in whom labour has not started (n = 40). Group 2: pregnant women with spontaneous labour between 37 and 41 weeks of gestation (n = 40). Demographic characteristics of individuals, age, body mass index, gravida, parity, living child, number of abortions and birth characteristics were recorded. Prepartum and postpartum haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) values and vitamin D levels of pregnant women were measured. We found no significant differences in vitamin D levels, smoking, mode of delivery, induction of labour, methods of cervical ripening and maternal and perinatal complications between the groups (p > .05). D vitamin in the model had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb (p < .05). Vitamin D levels seem not to be associated with postterm pregnancy. Vitamin D had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? The aetiology of post term pregnancy is not clearly known, factors such as foetal anencephaly, foetal sex, placental sulfatase deficiency, genetic factors, and high pre-pregnancy body mass index play a role. What do the results of this study add? Vitamin D levels seem not to be associated with postterm pregnancy. Vitamin D had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between vitamin D levels and postterm pregnancy.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diurnal Ramadan fasting on cardiometabolic risk factors (blood glucose, lipid profile, inflammatory cytokines) and sleep quality in healthy Turkish adults. This prospective observational study was conducted with a total of 32 individuals (12 males, 20 females) who were aged between 19-32 years and fasted for 25 or more continuous days in Ankara, Turkey between 1 Ramadan 1442 and 30 Ramadan 1442. Individuals applied fasting for 16 hours in the spring season. Blood samples were taken after at least 8 hours of fasting, anthropometric measurements were taken and sleep quality was assessed using The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at the beginning and the end of Ramadan. There was a significant decrease in body mass index (BMI), C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels during Ramadan fasting (p < .005). There were no changes in lipid profiles and sleep quality. There was a significant increase in fasting blood glucose levels (p < .05); however, this change is within normal limits. There was also a significant relationship between BMI and CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α levels (p < .05). The diurnal Ramadan fasting did not affect lipid profiles and sleep quality in healthy Turkish subjects. However, decreased BMI and inflammatory cytokine levels were observed at the end of Ramadan fasting. More studies are needed to clarify the role of Ramadan fasting in healthy populations.
